Beyond the Color Barrier: Supporting the Mental Health of Men of Color

Jun 16, 2025

Mid-way through June, I'm continuing my focus on men's struggles, in honor of Men's Mental Health Awareness month -- specifically focusing on the mental health struggles faced by men of color and those from disenfranchised communities.

Understanding Unique Challenges

Men of color and individuals from marginalized groups face unique mental health challenges. Their stories are shaped by their skin color, socio-economic background, and the systems they navigate daily. These men show resilience despite enduring significant disadvantages throughout their lives, often spanning multiple generations. While conversations around men's mental health are increasing, the discussions frequently fall short of addressing added pressures such as racism, discrimination, generational trauma, and systemic exclusion, which can suffocate.

Minority Stress and Daily Discrimination

Minority stress is a critical concern, characterized by the cumulative impact of discrimination, microaggressions, and social exclusion. Chronic exposure to racial stress can lead to severe health issues such as anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse. Men of color live with the reality of judgment and scrutiny simply due to their appearance, further compounded by societal expectations to remain emotionally stoic.

Cultural and Generational Trauma

Many communities carry trauma passed down through generations of oppression. This trauma is not just emotional or cognitive; it lives in the body, manifesting as hypervigilance, mistrust, and suppressed anger. Historical trauma, as discussed by Dr. Joy Degra, doesn't fade over time unless systems become equitable.

Barriers to Seeking Help

Men of color face substantial barriers when seeking mental health support. Cultural stigma within communities often discourages therapy, viewing it as a weakness or an outsider's endeavor. Additionally, there's justified mistrust of mental health institutions, exacerbated by the underrepresentation of black, Latino, indigenous, and Asian psychologists. Economic barriers further complicate access to mental health resources, with therapy remaining expensive and geographically inaccessible for many low-income men of color.

Building Support Systems

Meaningful support requires cultural competency, community-based healing, and safe spaces for emotional expression. Mental health professionals must be trained in cultural humility, recognizing the diverse cultural values and histories affecting their clients. Programs like Black Men Heal aim to fill gaps in traditional therapy, fostering healing through culturally relevant methods such as group therapy and barbershop talks.

Additionally, creating safe environments for men to express vulnerability without judgment is essential. Encouraging conversations in informal settings and modeling vulnerability can help. Furthermore, true allyship involves listening deeply, avoiding assumptions, and centering the needs of those we support.

Addressing Disenfranchisement

Echoing the insights of Scott Galloway, the disenfranchisement of modern men, particularly young men, reflects a troubling detachment from purpose, belonging, and recognition. This disconnectedness can lead to withdrawal and, in severe cases, harmful reactions. Addressing these issues through strong community ties and effective mental health care is crucial.

My Final Take

The mental health of men of color is a broad human issue affecting not just individuals but entire communities. While understanding every aspect may be impossible, creating supportive environments and maintaining open conversation is vital. If you are an ally or supporter, your presence and consistency can make a profound difference.

Until next time, remember that growth is a process, and as always, shift happens.
