The High Cost of Silence: Supporting Men’s Mental Health in Our Lives and Workplaces

Jun 24, 2025

Introduction

Welcome back to the Unstressed Exec blog. I’m Dr. George Vergolias, an executive and leadership coach, forensic psychologist, and your guide through mastering mental wellness, leadership under pressure, and thriving amidst change. We're closing out a special series for Men's Mental Health Awareness Month with an exploration of a crucial topic: the high cost of silence in men's mental health, and what we can do to support change.

The Chilling Truth of Men's Mental Health Silence

As we dive into the data, we're faced with a chilling reality. Men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women. Particularly alarming is the suicide rate among men aged 45 to 64, especially within white, blue-collar demographics. Beyond suicide, men are disproportionately represented in issues like substance abuse, incarceration, and homelessness, which stem from untreated mental health challenges.

A Societal and Economic Crisis

Men’s silence on mental health issues isn't just a public health issue; it's a fracture within our societal fabric. In 2023 alone, mental health-related problems cost the U.S. economy over 500 billion dollars annually. In the workplace, poor mental health is a growing crisis affecting productivity and morale.

Men, Violence, and Emotional Regulation

Understanding the relationship between emotionally unregulated men and violence is key. While not all men are prone to violence, poorly regulated emotions can escalate to tragic ends. Studies on mass shooters show a trajectory involving fixation on grievances, social isolation, leakage of violent intentions, and meticulous planning as precursors to violent acts.

Breaking the Silence

Despite being more psychologically informed than ever, barriers remain. Cultural expectations around masculinity still promote silence over emotional openness. Many workplaces penalize vulnerability, deterring men from seeking help. Systemic gaps, like expensive therapy and limited access to culturally competent providers, further complicate matters.

The Ripple Effects of Silence

Men's silence ripples through our society. From increased suicide rates to community trauma, and the economic impacts of lost productivity and legal costs. Families feel it through emotional unavailability and aggression, often perpetuating a cycle of avoidant behaviors in children.

Concrete Steps for Change

We can support men’s mental health across various domains:

  • At Home: Encourage open conversations, normalize mental health support, and celebrate emotional courage.
  • At Work: Revise policies to offer mental health days, host wellness check-ins, and bring in programs supporting the male experience.
  • In Society: Fund community-based mental health initiatives, advocate for better mental health insurance coverage, and use platforms to discuss these issues openly.

Preventing Violence Through Emotional Support

A roadmap to preventing violence involves recognizing warning behaviors, creating emotional space for men, normalizing professional help, promoting peer-based interventions, and supporting responsible disclosures of emerging pain.

Conclusion: The Price of Ignoring Men

Ignoring men’s mental health not only endangers them but our communities. We can change this narrative by building systems that nurture purpose, emotional fluency, community, and dignity in asking for help.

Thank you for engaging with this critical conversation. Where can you make a difference in supporting the men in your life and dismantling the myth that silence is strength? Let's change that story together.

Remember, insight without action changes nothing. Coaching can be the catalyst for real change, and Coaching will change you! Let’s start building momentum now.
